Stop John McCain.
Support a conservative approach to the economy.
Support a culture of life.
Support a federalist.
Support a man who will win the War.
Did I mention you would help stop John McCain?
Fred-heads are looking for a home. Their numbers have, at one time or another, included members of my family and good friends. Now Fred is gone and it is time to pick a new candidate. All the men running are fine leaders with accomplished records. All but one have a long track record of working with the conservative movement. Don’t let the passion of the political contest blind you to that fact.
It is time to pick the next President of the United States and we have some good choices as Republicans.
I believe the best choice is Mitt Romney.
Who has the executive experience to do the job? Who has the energy? What has the intellectual capacity to understand changing times? Who can unite the party?
There is only one candidate left in the race who can unite the Reagan coalition by embracing fiscal conservatism, social conservatism, and a plan to win the War on Terror.
The candidate’s name is Mitt Romney.
Mitt Romney understands the economy. As a world-class business leader, he was a problem solver. If there ever was an enterprise that was “not for profit” and needed a turn around like Mitt Romney brought to the Olympics, it is the government in Washington. With the economy finally showing signs of weakening it is time to support a guy who does not need training to know what to do.
Romney has an economic plan that will help in the long and the short term. He has a plan to streamline the federal government and actually rid it of much waste and duplication. He is not going to bust the budget or bust taxpayer wallets.
Mitt Romney is a former governor who understands the importance of the federal system. He will not just impose national solutions but look to empower the states.
Mitt Romney is an experienced executive who wants to be president, the chief executive of these United States.
What is not to like about that?
Mitt Romney understands the culture of life and is consistently pro-life in his views. Pro-life Fred-heads can choose between Romney who has seen the light on these issue, Rudy who disagrees with us, or a guy who voted our way, but has not passion for our position.
Romney is a conservative of the heart from a deeply religious community. If he was a prodigal son on life issues for a time, it was from a sincere belief that there was compromise possible in the public arena with the forces who support a culture of death. The radical nature and endless demands of those who would weaken life brought him to a sane position. As anyone who has ever done church work knows, nobody is a better advocate for a position than someone who has dabbled on the other side.
Give me the prodigal returned home if I must pick a passionate advocate.
John McCain is, I fear the elder brother who has always said the right things, but whose heart is not with us.
Finally, Romney understands the threat we face in the War on Terror. He is very smart, energetic, and has worked hard to master the details of the conflict. He has been a consistent and firm advocate of winning the War . . . which is the best way to bring the troops home. Nobody disputes John McCain and Rudy Giuliani’s leadership in the War to this point, but the next eight years will demand great energy, fresh thinking, resolve, and the intellectual flexibility to match changing times.
Romney is ready for that continuing challenge that came to the United States after 9/11. We take for granted President Bush’s success in keeping us terror free for these years of War, Romney does not. He will build on the President’s successes and work to correct mistakes. His goal is not to win the political debates of last year, but the War.
Either Mitt Romney or John McCain are the likely nominees this fall for the Republicans. Fred’s friends and where they go will have a big say in determining which man has the ability to win the election and best govern the republic.
If not Mitt, then McCain. If not now, then McCain.
Make it Mitt.
