The Truth about Nancy Pelosi!

In this blog, breaking news on Nancy Pelosi! Mormon?

Governor Romney can hardly cross the street without a reporter breathlessly asking, “Is America ready for a Mormon President?”

Harry Reid can hardly cross the street without someone asking, “Who is Harry Reid?”

The interesting thing is that no reporter asks, “Is America ready for a Mormon as Majority Leader?”

Yes, Harry Reid is a Mormon, though it does not appear to impact his views on the culture of death in his own party. If a Mormon is a Republican, then the brand of religion matters, but not if one is a Democrat and Harry Reid. Why?

Well, you see Republicans, the major media opines, are controlled by those evil traditional Christians and everyone knows (at least all thinking types) that such folk are as apt to Taliban each other as sing “Bringing in the Sheaves.”

Heavens! They would never vote for a Mormon, but they will make a Mormon majority leader by not voting in this election, because the major media will be very, very quiet about Harry Reid’s religion, so the evil traditional Christians will not know.

The obvious double standard is absurd and it is a great window into the mind of the major media. It says more about their views of traditional Christians than about Mormons.

Traditional Christians are not concerned about Harry Reid because he is a Mormon, in fact they wish he were a more intellectually consistent one when he votes.

It is disheartening to traditional Christians to discover that even the most rigorous groups have their own “in name only” politicians. My Catholic friends have Kennedy, Protestants have John Danforth, and the Orthodox have George Stephanopoulous. Each proclaims their piety, more or less, around election time and then votes in their own interest. One would have hoped that Mormons could have escaped, but no, they too have Harry “Land Deals” Reid and his gambling friends (!)

If there is any question that Mormonism is not new to politics, the existence of Harry “Let’s Make A Deal” Reid should end it. A religious group that can produce both Harry “This Land Is My Land” Reid and Orin “Mr. Excitement” Hatch is not making my blood run with terror.

To be clear: the media should stop being obsessed with Romney’s religion or they should cover everyone’s views with equal vigor. What does Kennedy think about transubstantiation anyway? Does Mr. Danforth believe Jesus physically rose from the dead? And George? We might start by finding George.

The major media is baiting traditional Christians with the Romney question, because they assume we cannot think our way through their plan. They are “covering” for Reid, because they actually think his religion is something that needs hiding in order to protect their favored party in a year they hope it will win.

Traditional Christians are smart enough to vote for the man or woman friendly to their views without giving theological quizzes.

Of course, the media may have ignored Reid’s religion, because nobody seems able to remember Old What’s His Name for more than a few minutes. Look at all the non-coverage of his crooked land dealings . . . Reid may be protected by a sort of invisibility cloak caused by terminal mediocrity.

“I wanted to write a story, boss” Jimmy Olson said in terror, “but I could not remember if his name was Henry or Harry.”

Am I outing Reid in this very story to signal to my vast number of followers to vote against his party this year?

Well, no. I assume my readers aren’t bigots and can reason their way to the conclusion that common cause in politics need not equal common theology.

(”By golly,” said the religious right voter clutching his Free Methodist hymnal, “We cannot vote for no Baptist, Catholic, Hindu, or Mormon, nope, we are going to vote for that good Methodist Hilary Clinton . . . ” But that is too far even for my imagination . . .)

In fact, traditional Christians know what it is like to have their arguments sneered at and their religion dismissed without a hearing. They hate seeing the same thing done to anyone.

If traditional Christians are going to have a religious argument, then we want to win a fair one!

And after all, he says with a wicked gleam in his eye, this Blog is preparing an October surprise: where we reveal that Nancy Pelosi:
a. has been to Salt Lake City
b. once watched an Osmond television special
c. once stayed in a Marriot.

Keep watching this space.
